Chapter 17

“I don’t know why we had to come back here,” Ruby said as we walked along the strip in Nassau, heading toward the club where I had come into contact with these guys in the first place. We were supposed to meet Mia there, and my head was still spinning from all that had happened. It hadn’t even been a day since we’d left this port, and already I was seeing everything differently.

“Because we do,” I said flatly, not bothering to look back at Ruby. Her attitude was getting more than a little tiring. While I understood where she was coming from, and I couldn’t imagine going through even half of what the woman had endured, the truth was that she wasn’t making any of this easy. While I didn't need anyone to hold my hand through things like this, I could have done without her constant complaining and attempts to block everything I wanted to do with this investigation. If I didn’t know better, I’d say she was doing this just to upset me. I knew how important this was to her, though, and I had to be careful about that. The truth was, if this were Mia, and if I had just found her freshly severed finger in a bag, there was no telling what I would do. Because of that, I tried to keep my voice lighter as I continued.

“Look,” I breathed. “The police here are looking for three more bombs, and what we found is proof that they’re headed in the wrong direction.”

“What are you talking about?” Ruby said. “There very well could be more bombs out there.”

“There could be,” I said, seeing the Willow End Brunch Club appear in my line of sight. “But I don't think so. Given the note and what we found in the shipwreck, I’m thinking that the numbers ‘1 of 4’, ‘2 of 4’, are referring to these clues.”

“What?” Rhett asked, looking over at me with narrowing eyes.

“I think we’re on some kind of chase,” I continued. “One of those Indiana Jones things you were talking about. I think whoever is behind this is trying to lead us to something, and I think they’re dropping these clues to make sure we’re on the right path.”

“The right path to what?” Rhett asked.

“I honestly have no idea,” I admitted. “But I do know that the police need to know about this. As of now, they’re in a panic looking for bombs that might not exist.”

“Or they might,” Ruby reminded me.

“That’s true,” I said. “But we need to make sure the police are up to date with things. I’m sure they won’t stop looking for bombs entirely, but knowing this might make them tweak their efforts.” I shook my head. “Besides, it’s not like we know where to go next, anyway.”

Ruby practically growled behind me. “We know this place isn’t it,” she said. “We know we’re wasting time.”

“Would you just shut up?” Rhett yelled, throwing his hands into the air. “Can’t you
